Tanzania
Ruaha National Park
Ruaha is Tanzania's secret. At 20,226 square kilometres — twice the size of the Serengeti — it is one of Africa's largest national parks, and it receives a fraction of the visitors. This is not a managed, sanitised safari experience. Ruaha is raw, semi-arid, and uncompromising — a place where the bush does not arrange itself for the camera, and the wildlife operates entirely on its own terms. The Great Ruaha River defines the landscape: its sandy banks are where elephants gather, where lions drink, and where crocodiles wait with geological patience. Ruaha holds Tanzania's largest elephant population, as well as exceptional populations of African wild dog, greater kudu, and sable antelope — species rarely seen in the more visited northern parks. For the traveller who has done the northern circuit and wants something harder, quieter, and more honest, Ruaha is the answer.
