About This Experience

Lake Eyasi sits at the remote southwestern edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a landscape that has stayed largely outside Tanzania's main safari circuit — and outside the pressures of mass tourism that come with it. It's home to two communities whose ways of life have little in common with each other, or with the pastoral traditions more commonly seen elsewhere on safari.
The Hadzabe are hunter-gatherers, one of the last groups on Earth living this way — no agriculture, no livestock, just deep, practical knowledge of the bush passed down directly. Joining a hunting party at dawn means walking with them, not watching a re-enactment; your guide translates as they track, forage, and occasionally demonstrate how a bow is strung or a fire is struck without matches.
A short distance away, the Datoga live a different life entirely — permanent homesteads, cattle herding, and a reputation as Tanzania's most accomplished traditional blacksmiths, forging arrowheads, jewellery, and tools by hand. Visiting both in a single morning gives a rare, honest picture of just how varied indigenous life in Tanzania still is.
Every visit is arranged in advance with community members, on their terms, with your guide acting as translator and cultural bridge throughout — this is a conversation, not a performance.
