Night Game Drive

Tanzania's national parks close their gates at sunset — a rule that protects both wildlife and visitors, but one that also means most safari-goers never see what the bush looks like after dark. On the private concessions bordering these parks, where different regulations apply, that changes.
Setting out just after the evening's sundowner, your guide switches to a handheld spotlight fitted with a red filter, designed to pick out eye-shine without disturbing natural behaviour the way white light would. The cast of characters shifts entirely: genets and civets moving along the tree line, spring hares bounding through the grass, aardvark and porcupine if you're fortunate, and — with real luck — a leopard beginning its night's hunt, or a hyena clan setting out from the den.
The pace is deliberately unhurried. Your guide will stop often, cut the engine, and let you simply listen — the bush at night has a different soundscape entirely, and much of the experience is as much about that stillness as it is about what crosses the spotlight beam.
This is best scheduled as a single evening activity rather than added to an already full day, since it typically runs into what would otherwise be dinner time at camp.
